Look Out For: high speeds as well as small twists, turns, and drops

Opening on May 28th, 2014, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has been a wonderful addition to the parks – bringing guests the excitement of a roller coaster but also a smooth, tame, and family friendly attraction. But how scary is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train? Let’s take a look at the ratings:

seven dwarfs mine train

1. Ride Length

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has a ride duration of only 2 minutes and 30 seconds.

2. Height Requirement and Warnings

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train has a height restriction of only 38 inches. Kids that couldn’t quite ride Space Mountain, Thunder Mountain, or Splash Mountain, might want to give this one a try. If not, the switching off option is available to those who may need it.

3. Ride Vehicles and Restraints

The Seven Dwarfs Mine Train ride vehicles consist of a 5-car train, each holding 4 riders per car and 2 riders per seat. Each person gets their own lap bar and a handle to hold onto if they so desire.

4. How does Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Work?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train works like a standard roller coaster with various twists, turns, and drops. What makes this attraction unique is the swinging mechanism allowing the ride vehicles to swing slightly from side to side in addition to moving along the track.

5. Is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Scary?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train is not intentionally scary. However, I should note that there is a brief (blink and you’ll miss it) sighting of the witch at the end of the ride. While it’s not purposefully scary, you should be aware if anyone in your party is sensitive to seeing Disney villains around the park.

6. How High is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train does involve some mild heights. While it does contain a couple of small lifts, this coaster remains relatively close to the ground.

7. How Fast is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train does go fast. It has a top speed of 34 miles per hour – almost exactly what you’d experience on Big Thunder Mountain, right across the park.

8. Does Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Have Drops?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train does have some drops. While it is technically a roller coaster, it really feels something between a kiddie coaster and something decidedly more intense like Space Mountain.

Because this attraction is fairly new, the ride is very smooth which definitely lowers the intensity factor quite a bit. In other older rides, you might experience the feeling of being whipped around a little bit or some pretty intense turbulence – but newer rides do tend to feel less intense just because of their smoother nature.

9. Does Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Cause Motion Sickness?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train should not cause motion sickness to most riders.

10. Is Seven Dwarfs Mine Train Claustrophobic?

Seven Dwarfs Mine Train should not be claustrophobic to most riders. There is a lap bar, but in our experience, the ride doesn’t last long enough to really feel trapped. This ride does have the propensity to unload slowly, so you might feel trapped for a few minutes while the train in front of you unloads.

11. Are There Animatronics on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train?

There are some animatronics on Seven Dwarfs Mine Train. There is one dark ride section that contains animatronics of some of the familiar characters from the film.  They are, however, very cartoonish and look just like the dwarfs in the movie. They aren’t intentionally scary at all but if you or your child are sensitive to animatronics, just know that they’re coming.

Mine Train Queue Walkthrough

You’ll find the queue entrance outside in the Fantasyland area and wind around in an outdoor section before entering an open-air building. There are fans and fun interactive queue elements around, so those who might feel claustrophobic in other queues might find this one to be pretty enjoyable.

You’ll enter a true indoor area labeled “vault” and step into a beautifully themed room with more colorful interactive props in a mineshaft setting. This might feel a bit cramped to some riders sensitive to that sort of thing, but in my experience, the amazing theming was a great distraction from that.

From there, you’ll step onto the loading platform and get ready to board the ride vehicles.

Mine Train Ride Walkthrough

Once you board the train, you’ll set off into the daylight, find your first lift, and twist and turn around the beautiful landscape. I’d compare the layout to this ride as similar to Thunder Mountain but definitely smoother and less intense.

From there you’ll enter a slow dark ride portion lasting just under a minute long and featuring your favorite characters from the film. This section is truly gorgeous, and while it is technically a dark area, there is no scary theming whatsoever and just beautiful to look at.

You’ll go up another lift (indoor this time and surrounded by the awesome dark ride section) before going down a small drop and twisting/turning a bit more before arriving in front of Snow White’s house.

I do have a couple of footnotes about this part of the ride – first, the ride does have a propensity to take a little while to unload, so if you are sensitive to feeling stuck on the ride as you wait for the train in front of you to unload, you may just want to be aware of that.

Secondly, there is a brief sighting of the witch from Snow White outside of her house. While she doesn’t do much and isn’t really presented in an intentionally scary way – I just wanted to let you know she’s there in case anyone in your party is sensitive to Disney villain sightings.

That’s it! Remember, everyone’s riding experience is a little bit different and only you can decide whether to hop on that ride vehicle or not. I just hope this guide helps you be prepared and enjoy every second of your Disney experience!
